AI-Powered IPE: Scaling and Sustaining Contemporary Collaborative Practice Training for Health Professions Learners

Project Overview

"This project addresses challenges in scaling and sustaining high quality Interprofessional Education (IPE) for a rapidly growing cohort of health professions learners at the University of Minnesota. Following rapid growth and innovation, the Center for Interprofessional Health's (CIH) ""Collaboration in Action: Learner-Driven Curriculum"" (LDC) now serves nearly 1,000 non-co-located students annually, creating a significant administrative and logistical burden. This scale challenges the ability of faculty and staff to efficiently manage complex student group formation, provide timely and individualized feedback on submissions, and maintain curriculum quality and growth.

The core solution is the strategic integration of the University’s approved Generative AI tool, Gemini, into the LDC infrastructure. By leveraging GenAI, the project will transform the learning environment to be more engaging and contemporary while simultaneously reducing the critical administrative load. Specific applications include developing a personalized, ""Other Profession Role"" Simulator for real-time practice, generating dynamic and authentic clinical case studies tailored to diverse student professions and practice settings, and optimizing complex student group matchmaking. This innovative transformation will not only ensure a high-quality, inclusive, and accessible learning experience for all participants but will also create a robust, scalable model for future IPE curriculum innovation."
