Canvas Hall of Fame: Connect

Create an inclusive space where every student belongs. The strategies below show how course sites can show the way for students to be successful in the course, make a personal connection with students right away, and respect student identity while building connections which can enhance student engagement and learning.

Show the Way

Lay a foundation of mutual support by clearing logistical hurdles together, ensuring students feel confident in the tech and connected to their peers from day one.

The Strategy

Design a "Getting Started" or “Welcome” module containing your syllabus, instructor contact information, technology help, resources, mental and student wellness, and an engaging, low-stakes quiz with relevant course orientation questions. This engages students right away. You could even include a Canvas discussion at this stage, which would enable students to share their findings, get to know each other and help one another navigate the course setup.

The Why

It builds a culture of curiosity and communal support when students navigate various parts of the course together, they realize they aren't alone if they get stuck later.

Make a Personal Connection

Use short videos to show students the "why" behind the work.

The Strategy

Include a brief "Weekly Intro" video in your weekly overview page or at the top of that week or units’ module. Use short videos to explain how the upcoming activities help them succeed in class and connect to their future careers or the real world.

The Why

It shows students that the instructor, you, are a real person who cares about their success, turning a list of tasks into meaningful work. It will help you build stronger connections with your students.

Inclusive Introductions & Learning Names

Respect student identity and build connections based on shared aspirations.

The Strategy

Invite students to record their name pronunciation in their profile. Use discussion boards that ask about their "Dream Job" or "Professional Mission" rather than just their major.

The Why

It helps students feel like they belong by encouraging connections with each other and linking their personal interests to the course.
