Prior Knowledge: Using what students know to help them learn (February 8, 2018)

Session Description

When is negative reinforcement not punishment? Why shouldn’t you tell a child that the earth is round? How can colorblindness be a form of racism?

In this workshop, Paul Ching (CEI) and Sara Schoen (ATSS) will talk about the ways that prior knowledge impacts students learning. We will discuss strategies for online and face-to-face courses that will help students use their prior knowledge for learning and address misconceptions that interfere with their learning.

As Will Rogers has purportedly said, “It’s not what we don’t know that gives us trouble. It’s what we know that ain’t so.”
